Kids and Dogs and Teachers at a Bar

Kaz's English teacher, Tracy (in pink), and Science teacher, Anna (in white, Swarthmore Class of 2008) watching the Super Bowl.

Watching the Super Bowl at a local bar.

Kaz sits on the floor at the bar, petting a dog, with his (student) math teacher (pointing) to his left. Re-reading this, it all sounds really BAD- kids and dogs with their teachers at a bar... But, actually, it was a blast!

Yes, we watched the Super Bowl on ESPN Vivo at a local basement bar, complete with dogs roaming around and two large “screens,” one of which was a computer projection onto a large cloth curtain. None of the commercials were the same as you saw in the U.S.- ours were all in Spanish and were for local goods and services.
I think most buildings here have doors, but they are left open so often, I really couldn’t be sure. Of course, the doors to the bar were open, and a couple of dogs came in. One was with her owner, but the other was alone. Kaz petted them both and fed the solitary one some dog food. Yes, Kaz carries dog food with him everywhere he goes. He bought a large bag of dry dog food at the store a few days ago and put some into a ziplock bag to carry around to feed the skinny dogs we see when we walk down to Santa Elena.
Around 60 people were at the bar, all English-speaking, including many teachers and interns from the school. Kaz was so pleased that his Math teacher pulled up a chair for him and explained the game to him. His Science teacher, English Teacher, and other Math teacher (a student teacher here for a couple of months) were there, too. I should add that the English teacher and Math teacher are married to each other, so of course came as a pair. The student Math teacher sat with Kaz on the floor for awhile, along with another boy in his class.
When the Science teacher left after the game, she kissed the kids sitting on the floor on the top of their heads and said, “See you tomorrow.” Kaz said, “You know, if I saw my teachers at home on the street, it would be really awkward, and they would probably ask me about an assignment. Here, they pull up a chair for you and explain things.” And kiss them goodnight. Sweet.
