Windmills and Poverty

Our first impression of Nicaragua was that it is a very poor country. No surprise there. Our Spanish teacher later told us that 60% of the population lives in abject poverty, 30% in poverty, and 10% in the middle class or above.

Despite passing a field of impressive windmills, we arrived in San Juan del Sur to learn that the power had been turned off all over the town until 5:00. Being the gringos (foreigners) we are, our first problem with this came about when we could not withdraw local currency from any of the ATMs.

Here is that truck again. Fortunately, nobody fell out. You can't really tell, but that is Kaz in the middle.

This was the prevalent vista on the way to San Juan del Sur. Mile after mile of shacks with small animals running around them. They made our suboptimal house in Monteverde look like a palace.
